Newcastle United should sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City in the summer transfer window.
Gylfi Sigurdsson may be playing for a club struggling for survival in the Premier League, but there can be no doubt that the Swansea City star is one of the best attacking midfielders around.
Sigurdsson was perhaps unlucky to be let go by Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, but during his spell at Swansea so far, he has showcased his quality and calibre.
The Iceland international midfielder has scored eight goals and created 58 chances in 29 Premier League appearances for the Swans so far this season.
During the 2015-16 campaign, the 27-year-old scored 11 goals and created 56 chances in 36 league games.
Swansea may eventually retain their Premier League status for the 2017-18 campaign, but it is clear that Sigurdsson is destined for a bigger team. Could Newcastle United be that team? Absolutely yes.
The Magpies are in the Championship at the moment, but they should get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season, and once they do so, they should go all out to sign Sigurdsson.
On Monday morning, The Sun reported of Newcastle’s interest in the former Tottenham midfielder, but later in the day, The Chronicle claimed that manager Rafael Benitez is not looking to sign him.
Newcastle fans on Twitter responded positively to the initial report (click here to read more), and Benitez should listen to them. Sigurdsson’s creativity, vision and experience is going to take the Magpies to a whole new level, and he could make them top-10 contenders.
