Newcastle United hammered Fulham 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has told The Chronicle that owner Mike Ashley came into the dressing room after Sunday’s 4-0 away win at Fulham.
The Magpies travelled down to Craven Cottage on Sunday for their final game of the Premier League season, and they turned in a superb display.
Jonjo Shelvey’s outstanding opener gave Newcastle the lead, before Ayoze Perez continued his fine form with the second for Benitez’s side.
Fabian Schar powered home a header to make it three, and Salomon Rondon got himself on the scoresheet from close range to seal a 4-0 victory.
It was a great performance from Newcastle, but with lingering questions over Benitez’s future as Magpies boss, there are still major fears that this was his final game in charge.
Owner Ashley is the man who must sort out a new contract for Benitez, and he was actually in attendance at Craven Cottage before going to see the Newcastle players.
Benitez revealed that Ashley came into the dressing room to congratulate the players and thank them for a season, which has seen Newcastle finish in 13th place.
“He said congratulations and thank you very much for the season,” said Benitez. “He was congratulating the team,” he added.
The Chronicle also note that Ashley cancelled a trip to Las Vegas for the players. However, there’s no animosity, as they’ve instead been given a bonus, with many players already bookings holidays before the Las Vegas trip was even put forward.
