Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has spoken of how new recruits Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca have already had an instant positive effect on the rest of the squad.
The Magpies endured a difficult January and, by the arrival of transfer deadline day, had not yet signed anybody.
However, Paraguay attacker Almiron joined in a club-record fee from MLS side Atlanta United on the last day of the window as did Monaco left-back Barreca, who arrived on a loan deal (Sky Sports News).
Newcastle have won their last two Premier League games, including a shock triumph over reigning champions Manchester City, and the feeling around St James’ Park is much more positive going into the February fixtures.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff away at Tottenham Hotspur, Benitez outlined how the feelgood factor generated by the new arrivals and their attacking credentials can already be seen on the training ground.
“I’m happier because these two players fill the gap and also, with the character they have, they can improve the team,” Benitez told Sky Sports News.
“It’s something that we needed, and you can see the reaction of the other players around – the wingers and full-backs are running faster and the centre-backs are happier because there is another offensive player to help the team. It has been positive for everyone and we will see how positive it can be.”
Sometimes it’s little things that can instantly provide a boost to the atmosphere in a place and the players won’t be the only ones who have already benefited, the Toon Army is likely to be feeling much more positive as they take on Spurs at Wembley.
