Rafael Benitez has told the Daily Mirror that Newcastle United would accept second place, if it was offered to them right now.

Newcastle are in a battle for the Championship title with Brighton & Hove Albion, and currently sit one point behind the Seagulls.

And Benitez admits that he is not too concerned about catching Brighton, with promotion the sole aim this term.

“We just want one point more than third,” Benitez said, when asked whether Newcastle would be happy to take second spot.

“I’d accept second place now. I don’t have a problem with trophies.”

Newcastle currently have a five point cushion inside the automatic promotion places.

However, they face what could be a season defining match later this evening, when they take on Brighton at the AMEX Stadium.

Chris Hughton’s side have been in wonderful form this season, and the winner of the match on the south coast will take a massive step closer to achieving promotion.

Newcastle head into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw with Bristol City in their most recent fixture, while Brighton won 3-0 against Reading in their last outing.
