Rafael Benitez has told BBC Radio Newcastle that Jesus Gamez did ‘okay’ after being handed a rare start for Newcastle United last night.

Newcastle were without the injured DeAndre Yedlin yesterday when they took on Reading, and Gamez was called into the starting line-up.

The Magpies managed to pick up a 0-0 draw against the Royals, to strengthen their bid for promotion.

And when asked what he made of Gamez’s performance, Benitez said: “Jesus was fine on the ball, he’s fine.

“Defensively it was not an easy game, but I think he was okay. As always when you have a new player, you cannot expect he will be the best in the team, but he did fine.”

Gamez was brought to Newcastle from Atletico Madrid last summer, and he has had a frustrating time of things at St. James’ Park.

The Spaniard has missed a lot of the season with injury, but could be set for a run of starts now.

Yedlin is expected to be out for a considerable amount of time, and Gamez looks his most likely replacement.

Newcastle are next in action when they take on Fulham at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
