Newcastle United are set to invest in their squad in the January transfer window.

Rafael Benitez has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of Newcastle United’s match against Manchester City, that he is still working on bringing in players ahead of the January transfer window.

Newcastle have won just once in their last 10 outings, and have slipped right down into a relegation fight.

The Magpies are just one point above the drop zone now, after losing to Manchester City last night.

Newcastle were not embarrassed by City, but their performance in the contest highlighted the battle they are up against in the top tier.

Benitez set his side up very defensively, with Newcastle clearly fearing attacking Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Spanish boss is known to be chasing transfers in January, and when asked if he had made progress ahead of the January transfer window opening, he said; “I cannot say too much. We are working to try and bring in some players.

“I have to work with Lee Charnley, and find the players we need to stay in the Premier League.”

Newcastle’s budget for the upcoming transfer window is not known, as a potential takeover bid rumbles on.

If Amanda Staveley is at the helm, Benitez is expected to have funds to spend, but if Mike Ashley remains in charge then Newcastle’s budget could be limited.
