Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez wanted full control of transfers when he signed at St. James’ Park.

Rafael Benitez has refused to give anything away when asked whether he would quit as Newcastle United manager if Mike Ashley was to block a transfer he requested, as per his comments in the Daily Mail.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle are considering amending their transfer policy this month.

Benitez is currently in control of who the Magpies target, but the Mail claim that Mike Ashley is keen to ensure that Newcastle don’t stop buying young players who can be sold on for profit.

Benitez specifically requested having full control over transfers as part of the conditions which made him sign a new contract at Newcastle.

And when asked if he would quit, should he not be allowed to make the signings that he wanted.

The Spaniard said: “What I have to do is to win games, to prepare my team in the best way possible.

‘We are looking to get promoted and I will try to do my best in any case.”

Benitez has done his job of winning games for Newcastle very well so far this season, with the Tynesiders currently on top of the Championship table.

Newcastle appear to be well placed to make an immediate return to the Premier League, after a strong first half of the campaign.

The Magpies are next in action this evening, when they take on Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
