Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that both Rob Elliot and Jesus Gamez were not taken to Spain with the rest of the Newcastle United squad, due to their fitness issues.

Both Elliot and Gamez are trying to recover from injury problems, and Benitez felt that the pair would be better off staying on Tyneside rather than flying out to Newcastle’s training camp.

He said: “I was talking with the doctor. Still, he’s progressing, and that’s why we did not take him to Spain.

“He and (Jesus) Gamez stayed at Newcastle to work with the physios and the fitness coach. We have to wait a little bit for them, but maybe by the start of next month they will be back.”

Newcastle have been in Spain for warm weather training over the international break.

Even when Elliot and Gamez do return it seems highly unlikely that either will impact on the first-team.

Elliot is currently behind both Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow in the race to be Newcastle’s number one.

Gamez, meanwhile, has not made much of an impact ever since he joined the Magpies and could well move on at the end of the season.

Newcastle are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Huddersfield Town.
