Rafael Benitez has admitted to the Chronicle that Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles went into his side’s latest match with an injury problem.

Lascelles damaged his shoulder in training this week, but played through the pain for Newcastle against Watford.

The centre-back was selected to start, but had to come off after aggravating the problem.

And Benitez said: “We will see what is going on. Jamaal had a little problem with his shoulder in a training session the other day, but we will have to wait a little bit and see how they are.”

Newcastle suffered three injuries during their match with Watford, but still held on to win.

The Magpies were searching for their first three points of the season, and had to show great grit and desire to get over the line.

Watford pushed them hard throughout the contest, but a goal from Ayoze Perez proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Newcastle have moved out of the relegation zone in the Premier League table, after finally getting their first win of the season.

Benitez’s side are next in action when they take on Bournemouth at the weekend.
