Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed in the Chronicle that it is ‘good news’ that Dwight Gayle has come through this week unscathed after injury problems.

Gayle has been suffering with a hamstring injury, and had a set back when he tried to come back from it initially.

The former Crystal Palace striker started for Newcastle against Aston Villa last month, but he hobbled off in the first-half.

Gayle then missed another two matches, before coming on in a late substitute in Newcastle’s match against Huddersfield Town last weekend.

The 25-year-old scored Newcastle’s final goal in their 3-1 victory over the Terriers.

And Benitez has confirmed at his press conference that Gayle is now fully fit and back in starting contention.

“Gayle is good news and Anita is fine to play,” Benitez said. “Gayle is our top scorer and he can make the difference for us going forward.”

Newcastle’s win over Huddersfield has strengthened their position at the top of the Championship table.

The Magpies are next in action against Reading tomorrow evening at the Madejski Stadium.
