Newcastle United beat Norwich City 4-3 at St. James’ Park last night.
Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that it was clear to see his Newcastle United’s side’s character during their win over Norwich City last night.
Newcastle came from 3-1 down to seal a dramatic victory at St. James’ Park, which has put them right back into the thick of the promotion race.
The Magpies scored twice in injury time to collect the three points, and move up into third place in the Championship table.
And Benitez said: “You never know how important this could be.
“It is still early, but if you win and you win in this way, it is a boost for everyone. It is a boost for the players and the fans.
“You have to give credit for the players because their work rate and spirit – everything you are looking for – you could see. You could see all of those things.”
Newcastle had taken the lead in the first-half, when they looked thoroughly dominant, but an equalising goal from Graham Dorrans seemed to knock the hosts out of their stride.
Alex Neil’s side went on to score twice more through Cameron Jerome and Jacob Murphy, and at that stage, it seemed that the points would be heading back to East Anglia.
However, Newcastle fought back – with a Gayle hat-trick and a solitary strike from Yoan Gouffran helping them to seize the victory.
Newcastle are now just one point behind Norwich, with Benitez’s side’s next match coming against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.
