Newcastle United lost against Leicester City in the Premier League on Monday.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has explained to The Shields Gazette what he found positive in his side’s defeat to Leicester City on Monday evening.
Benitez lost his first game in charge of Newcastle, as the Magpies suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leicester away from home in the Premier League.
Shinji Okazaki’s spectacular overhead kick in the 25th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides at the King Power Stadium.
The loss means that Newcastle’s poor run of form continues, as they remain in the relegation zone.
Benitez, who replaced Steve McClaren as the Newcastle boss last week, has outlined the positives he took from his side’s performance against the Foxes.
“I’m happy with the performance of the players – the commitment, the work rate,” the former Liverpool boss told The Shields Gazette. “We have to get results.
“I could see a lot of positives, but we still have to improve and change correctly details that can make the difference. Our team is conceding goals and not scoring too many.
“We created chances, we had some chances and that is a positive. We had two chances at the beginning, and a few more. It could have been different, and that’s the positive for me. We were attacking and creating.”
Over the course of the 90 minutes at the King Power Stadium on Monday evening, Newcastle had 50% of the possession, took 13 shots of which only two were on target, and earned four corners.
The Magpies also created 11 chances and put in 19 crosses, but the problem is that they failed to score.
Winning against Leicester was always going to be tough, and now Newcastle can focus on the game against Sunderland this coming weekend.
