Liverpool desperately need a centre back, having learned that Joe Gomez will now miss a number of months with a knee injury.

The Reds are already without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season, and with Fabinho out too, the last thing they needed was another defensive blow.

Gomez’s injury has done just that though, and Jurgen Klopp will surely have to dip into the transfer market in January.

One of the key names being linked right now is that of Olympiacos ace Ruben Semedo, with Sportime claiming that the Reds have made contact to sign him.

It’s stated that Liverpool will give him a five-year deal, and he could cost around €20million (£18million), with the Reds now believing that he can fill in for Van Dijk.

The rumour seems a little left-field, as Semedo is 26 and has a number of off-field stories surrounding him, though he does already know Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.

One interesting note is that former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has been a big fan of Semedo in the past, having wanted to bring him to Newcastle United in the summer of 2017.

Benitez allegedly received a host of positive reports about Semedo during his time at Sporting, but Newcastle lost out to Villarreal.

More than three years on, Semedo could end up heading to Anfield, and some fans may be somewhat reassured knowing that Benitez is such a big fan.
