Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has suggested that the club is close to being sold.

Newcastle United boss has told the Chronicle that Lee Charnley has told him that it is ‘business as usual’, after meeting today.

Mike Ashley went on record last night to suggest that Newcastle were edging closer to being sold.

And Benitez met with Charnley to discuss the comments earlier today, but the Newcastle hierarchy were not giving much away.

“I spoke with Lee Charnley today. The message is clear: ‘Business as usual.’ I was not expecting it but I am just focusing on the game,” Benitez said.

“We have been in this situation before, we just carry on.”

Newcastle have indeed been in similar situations before, only for takeover deals to collapse.

Benitez’s best hopes of having money to spend in January may be if the deal does go through.

The Newcastle boss has made it clear that he wants to bring in additions, but it remains to be seen whether Ashley will provide him with funds, if he stays in charge.

Newcastle are next in action tomorrow evening, when they take on Everton at Goodison Park.
