Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has offered hope to Aleksandar Mitrovic at his latest press conference, which was covered by the Chronicle.

Mitrovic did not even travel with Newcastle’s squad for their most recent match against Reading.

The Serbian international appears to have been demoted to Newcastle’s third choice striker, following the return of Dwight Gayle to fitness.

But Benitez insists that he has been impressed with Mitrovic’s reaction to his omission in training.

“He’s been training well. With the striker situation it’s tough,” the Spanish manager admitted. “Murphy has had to wait. Now he’s playing well. He had to keep doing what he’s doing – training well. He must keep working hard. Hopefully he will score goals with his national team.”

Mitrovic has failed to score with much regularity for Newcastle this season.

The target-man forward has just six goals to his name, after what has been a disappointing campaign for him.

Mitrovic was expected to be a key player as Newcastle this term, but he has failed to hold down a first-team place and now his future at St. James’ Park looks uncertain.

It seems unlikely that Mitrovic will feature in Newcastle’s next match, which comes against Fulham at the weekend.
