Newcastle United were linked with the Chelsea midfielder back in the summer.

Rafael Benitez must be looking back wondering what might have been if he was given the funds to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek for Newcastle United in the summer.

The Chronicle reported how Newcastle were keen on Loftus-Cheek before the season started, but the deal was impossible to complete.

Benitez simply didn’t have the funds to snap up the England international after the World Cup, which has raised his price-tag considerably.

Loftus-Cheek has now stuck around at Chelsea, and his game time has been very limited.

The youngster has only been given a handful of opportunities, but he has still managed to hit six goals this term.

And Benitez must think about how much better Newcastle would be with a goalscoring threat like that from midfield.

Newcastle have struggled for goals this term, with Salomon Rondon leading their scoring charts, with five strikes to his name.

And Benitez must be wishing that he was backed with the sort of funds that would have enabled him to sign Loftus-Cheek now.
