Foot Mercato recently claimed that Newcastle are looking at the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea boss as a potential candidate to replace Steve Bruce as their manager at the end of the season.
The 42-year-old was appointed the Marseille manager only in the summer of 2019 and guided the team to second place in the Ligue 1 table before the season in France was called off due to the global health crisis.
According to ESPN, with Andoni Zubizarreta having been dismissed by Marseille as the club’s sporting director, Villas-Boas will leave the club.
While this reported development is potentially good news for Newcastle, there is a twist in that Rafael Benitez is now allegedly on the radar of the French club.
According to ESPN, the former Newcastle and Liverpool manager is of interest to Marseille as a potential replacement for Villas-Boas.
Sky Sports have reported that if the prospective new owners of Newcastle fail to bring former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to St. James’ Park this summer, then they will make a move for Benitez, who left the club at the end of last season.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund are on the verge of buying Newcastle from current owner Mike Ashley, according to Goal.com.
