Injuries have restricted the Spaniard to just two appearances for Newcastle following his summer move.
Rafael Benitez has expressed his disappointment at how Jesus Gamez’s Newcastle United career has panned out so far, the Chronicle reports.
The 31-year-old appeared to be a major signing for the Magpies in the summer, given his experience in La Liga, but he has been unable to make much of an impact, having made just two appearances for the club so far.
Gamez, during his time with Atletico
The Chronicle reports that a calf injury has been the main reason that he has been unable to make more of an impression, and Benitez has detailed the stumbling blocks that have prevented Gamez being involved more often.
“When we signed him we were bringing in an experienced player in who can play on both sides of the defence,” he said, as reported by the Chronicle.

“For us it has been a pity. But the good thing I would say about him was he was training every day and not missing anything. He was pushing himself.
“The bad thing was that it wasn’t enough so we decided to stop him and start another treatment and we’ll see if he’s fine now.”
Newcastle have made a promising start to the season
Having the former Atletico Madrid man back following the international break will undoubtedly provide Newcastle with a major boost as they look to continue their promising start to the season.
The coming months may well stretch the Magpies’ squad and test just how much depth they actually boast as games come thick and fast.
And having Gamez to compete with the likes of DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett will surely enhance their chances of coming through that period still in a strong position.
