Newcastle United appear to be concentrating on offloading players in the coming days.

Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that Newcastle United’s squad is simply too big and needs to be cut down.

Newcastle have struggled to sign players this summer, but they have also found it difficult to clear the decks.

The Magpies are looking to allow players to leave, to make room for new additions.

And Benitez admits that he has too many players who aren’t in his plans at St. James’ Park.

“No, not all of them – we have too many,” the Spanish boss said.

“We have to get down to 25 players and try to adjust. We have too many now.”

Newcastle are thought to want to offload a number of fringe players in their current squad, following promotion.

The likes of Karl Darlow, Emmanuel Riviere and Siem De Jong are all surely at threat of leaving Tyneside over the coming weeks.

Newcastle are still hunting new additions, after bringing in four new players so far this summer.

The Magpies have snapped up Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy, Javier Manquillo and Christian Atsu over the transfer window to date.

Newcastle’s competitive campaign begins in the middle of August, when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.
