Newcastle United failed to win against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has suggested to BBC Sport (17:22) that his side did not win against Aston Villa because they could not take their chances.
The Magpies played out a goalless draw with already relegated Villa away from home at Villa Park in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
“We were a little bit anxious in the first half,” Benitez told BBC Sport (17:22). “We were not comfortable in possession. You have to take your chances and we didn’t do that.
“We had to change things in the second half. We did that, but it was not enough. The players are disappointed.”
Over the course of the 90 minutes at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, Newcastle had 54% of the possession, took nine shots of which three were on target and earned five corners.
The Magpies had a pass accuracy of 83%, created six chances, put in 37 crosses, and attempted 11 dribbles.
Benitez’s side headed into the game against Villa high on confidence and as favourites, but they are now staring at life in the Championship.
If Sunderland win either of the final two matches, then Newcastle will get relegated form the Premier League.
Perhaps it is time that Newcastle fans realise that there is no way out of this situation…
