“It depends on him,” Benitez told The Shields Gazette when asked if Gayle would be available for the game against Norwich.

“He is training with the team, and he has trained OK, but sometimes it is the confidence of the player, so we will see how he feels.”

Newcastle United's Dwight Gayle scores their second goal

Gayle joined Newcastle from Premier League club Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by The London Evening Standard to be worth £10 million.

The former Peterborough United striker has been a massive hit at the Magpies. The 26-year-old has scored 20 goals and created 19 chances in 22 Championship matches for Newcastle so far this season.

Newcastle are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 65 points from 30 matches, just a point above second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Benitez’s side are favourites to win the league title and get automatic promotion to the Premier League.
