Newcastle United are in the market for new additions.

Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that he expects Newcastle United to make their first addition of the January transfer window this week.

Newcastle are believed to be on the hunt for new additions, but their attempts to sign players have proven fruitless so far.

The Magpies have failed to get a deal over the line for any of their top targets yet, with Benitez having to be patient.

However, the Spaniard believes that he is now close to making some signings, with Newcastle keen to strengthen their squad.

“It’s so obvious that we have to balance a little bit the team; I’m expecting something this week, hopefully,” he said.

“But that’s just my feeling, I’m expecting. You can see that still we can improve the side a little bit.”

Newcastle are said to be interested in signing Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, while Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend is also a target (Chronicle).

There are complications in both deals currently, with Newcastle struggling to get either of the line.

Chelsea reportedly are loathed to send Loftus-Cheek out on loan, while Palace want to do a permanent deal for Townsend.

Newcastle are more keen to bring the England international in until the end of the season, with a view to making the transfer a more long-term one should they earn promotion.

Newcastle currently sit at the top of the Championship table, after beating Rotherham United 4-0 in their latest match.
