Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed to The Shields Gazette the conversation he has had with club owner Mike Ashley.

The Magpies have already booked their place in the top two of the Championship this season and have guaranteed their spot in the Premier League for the 2017-18 campaign.

Benitez has revealed that Newcastle owner Ashley has congratulated him on achieving promotion back to the English top flight.

The former Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has also claimed that the conversation with Ashley was very positive.

“Yes,” Benitez told The Shields Gazette when asked if Ashley is happy with him. “He was really positive, so I don’t need to create anything, I don’t need to invent anything. It’s just very clear.

“The first time that I met him was very positive. This time, when I was in contact with him by phone, he was quite positive and everything was fine. Now we just have to sit down and discuss every single thing.”

“I will not say anything about that,” added Benitez when asked about his future at Newcastle. “What I will say is that I have had a very honest and open conversation with Mike, and it was quite positive. Now we have to have a proper meeting face-to-face and see where we are.”

Newcastle have arguably the best squad in the Championship, and their promotion to the Premier League should not have come as a surprise to anyone.

The Magpies, though, need to make good signings in the summer transfer window in order to compete in the English top flight next season.

Benitez has to be very clever in the summer, and Newcastle owner Ashley also needs to back the Spaniard with transfer funds.

Newcastle will return to action on Friday evening when they take on Cardiff City away from home at the Cardiff City Stadium in the Championship.
