Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has made an indifferent start at St. James’ Park.
Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has a great future at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle signed Sels in the January transfer window from Gent, and he has made a difficult start to life on Tyneside.
Benitez has shown great faith in the Belgian by putting him into the starting line-up, but he is under pressure from sections of the support.
Sels was forced to delete his Twitter account after the criticism he received, following a mistake during Newcastle’s last match against Aston Villa.
The stopper came to claim a cross, but failed and allowed Aaron Tshibola to head home a late equaliser.
Benitez is set to stick by Sels, and name him in Newcastle’s starting line-up against Norwich City this evening.
And the Spanish boss said: “He’s ok and training well.
“He was working with Simon (Smith), the goalkeeping coach. He has to go on the pitch and keep working with Darlow. We have to work with them and talk again. He’s being treated as normal. It doesn’t have to be a problem.
“He’s a young lad coming to a new country. I think he has a great future.”
If Benitez does choose to swap Sels in the future, he could be replaced by Karl Darlow.
Darlow impressed in the Premier League last term, and has already accumulated a good amount of Championship experience during his time with Nottingham Forest.
