Newcastle United have only signed Kenedy so far in the January transfer window.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez looks on during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley at Old Trafford on December 26, 2017 in Manchester, England.

Rafael Benitez has told The Chronicle that he still has “no idea” whether Newcastle United will sign anyone else in the January transfer window.

Kenedy joined the Magpies on a half-season loan from Chelsea last week but other additions are key if Newcastle – one point above the relegation zone – are to put distance between themselves and the strugglers.

The talk is that Newcastle are interested in signing a striker, with a host of names – including Nicolai Jorgensen – being thrown about.

According to The Shields Gazette, United had a £12 million bid knocked back for the Feyenoord striker last week, with the Dutch side wanting around £20 million it seems.

Time is of the essence for the Spanish manager, who has less than three full days to get a few transfers over the line, but the former Liverpool boss claims that he does not know the state of play.

Asked by The Chronicle whether a signing was imminent, Benitez said: “I have no idea at the moment. We are trying to do business. Still we will see as we have time, and hopefully we can do something.

“I think we will have chances. Obviously it is not ideal because I wanted to do my business by January 15 or 20, but still we have days and I have the belief that maybe we can do something – and maybe it will be right.”

Newcastle’s transfer windows tend to be messy affairs but Benitez not knowing the state of play would be really farcical, though it’s likely that he’s simply keeping his cards close to his chest.
