The Newcastle head coach is remaining positive despite the early signs.
Rafael Benitez says he has no regrets over joining Newcastle United and wants to stay on Tyneside for ‘a while,’ according to the Shields Gazette.
The Spaniard insists he is pleased to face such a tough challenge at Newcastle and very much wants to be in the same job next season.
When asked whether he has any regrets, the Spaniard is quoted as telling reporters by the Gazette: “No.
“I want to stay here for a while, so I’m really pleased to have this challenge. For me it is a challenge.
“I am the Newcastle manager and I want to be the Newcastle manager next year.”
The Magpies boss is making the right noises about his future, then, and supporters may take great solace in Benitez choosing to stay at St James’ Park – if he eventually does.
But the problems Newcastle face, of course, stem from how the club is run. Benitez has had trouble with problematic owners in the past, especially during the transfer window.
The Spaniard will want big investment if he stays – and will have an even greater desire to choose who is brought in and when.
Will Mike Ashley allow him to work the way he wants? If he doesn’t, Benitez choosing to stay at Newcastle may not last too long anyway…
