Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has urged Yoan Gouffran to remain professional amid uncertainty about his future, speaking to Sky Sports.

The winger had been expected to leave this summer, with the Chronicle reporting that the Frenchman is among six players Rafa Benitez wants to move on.

However, he has since featured in their last two games, putting in relatively impressive displays in the wins over Reading and Bristol City.

That has raised questions about whether the winger could in fact have a future at St James Park and Benitez has urged him to remain professional until the end of the transfer window.

“I would say Gouffran, because maybe he will leave or maybe he will stay, so to keep him professional and training well was important,” he told Sky Sports.

“When you look at the way he has played and the effort he put in on the pitch, is not easy. It’s important for us to get to August 31st and regroup, then see where we are.”

It will certainly be interesting to see what further work that Newcastle do before the end of the transfer window.

Despite a busy summer so far, all indications have been that Benitez is determined to do more work on both incomings and outgoings before that window slams shut.

Indeed, whether or not he can secure the further signings he wants is likely to play a big part in whether the likes of Gouffran do end up departing the North East.
