According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are eyeing a reunion with Andros Townsend this summer as the Magpies eye up the free transfer market.

Sheffield United’s John Lundstram and West Brom’s Kyle Bartley are also mentioned as potential signings by the Chronicle.

However, Townsend is the most significant name on the list, given his ties to Newcastle.

The £55,000-a-week forward left St James’ Park in a £13 million deal back in 2016, which saw Dwight Gayle move the other way on the same day.

Townsend only made 13 appearances for Newcastle, scoring four goals and recording two assists before sadly suffering relegation.

His best displays came under Rafa Benítez, who described the 13-cap England international as a ‘good player’ back in April 2019.

Speaking about the forward’s exit, the Chronicle quote the Spaniard as saying: “He said: If I stay in the Premier League I’ll have more chances (to play for England). So you have to understand that he is a professional and wanted to do well for his country.”

“He left, but he was a good player.”

With just one goal and four assists in 27 Premier League appearances this season, Townsend hasn’t had the best campaign, to say the least.

However, signing a player of his experience on a free transfer is almost a no brainer for the Magpies, even more so seeing as he knows the club well.

There is every chance of the 29-year-old renewing his contract with Crystal Palace.

However, if he doesn’t, Newcastle need to be all over this deal.
