The Newcastle United manager has had to operate on a tight budget this season.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez spoke to reporters ahead of his side’s clash with Everton in the Premier League tonight, and urged the club’s owner mike Ashely to sufficiently back him in the transfer market this summer, as quoted by the Northern Echo.
The Spaniard has worked wonders during his time in charge of the Magpies, and deserves huge credit considering the fact that he has not been given the funds that he wanted to improve his squad.
With a win against the Toffees at Goodison Park tonight, the Toon can move level on points with eighth placed Leicester City, and if they can finish the season inside the top half of the Premier League table, it will surely be one that is considered as a real success.
Benitez addressed the media before his side’s trip to Merseyside tonight, and urged Mike Ashley to provide him with the funds that he needs to really take Newcastle forward next season, as quoted by the Northern Echo:
“I cannot do miracles every year. You have to have the tools to make sure you can do your job. I spend a lot of time coaching and improving players, so I do not have a problem with young players because they will grow and become much better players. But you need to win, so you need players with experience. When we had problems in the Championship, or even in the Premier League with this squad, we needed experience. So it’s not just a case of, ‘Oh, the manager is calm, he has vast experience’ because you don’t play.”
Ashley has made no secret of his desire to sell up at St James’ Park, but that has so far failed to materialise, and if he is still in control of the Magpies in the summer, it will be interesting to see if he offers Benitez his full backing in the transfer market.
