Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told the Chronicle that his team has to be more mature this season.

The Magpies hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon looking to make it six consecutive wins in the Championship.

However, it proved to be a highly frustrating afternoon for them as an own goal from Chancel Mbemba and a strike from Helder Costa saw Walter Zenga’s side secure a 2-0 win.

It was an indifferent display from Benitez’s side who failed to turn their domination – they had 68 per cent possession and 17 shots in the game – into a win.

Instead they ended up losing and Benitez says that there is one thing they must change to fix that issue.

“I said we had room for improvement, and that is something that is obvious,” he told the Chronicle.

“We have to be more mature and manage the games in a manner where, if you cannot win, you do not lose. To be sure of that, you have to have the control of the game.”

While Benitez wants his side to be more mature, a look at the stats shows it is the number of chances they are creating that should be worrying him.

So far this season they have only created 1.1 big chances per game, which is the 12th best record in the division at this stage.

They have also only registered 9.6 key passes per game, which is the 13th best record in the league.

For a team as full of talent as theirs, with such a forward line as powerful as it is, they should be doing more and that is something Benitez should be looking to improve.
