The Magpies have fallen into the Championship, but many supporters are excited about what they could achieve under the Spaniard.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
Rafael Benitez has admitted that he is not entirely sure whether Newcastle United are in a better position now in comparison with when he first took over last season, the Chronicle reports.
The Spaniard arrived at St James’ Park when they were in the Premier League relegation zone. And while he was unable to save them from the drop, there is a sense of optimism around the club that has arguably been missing for several years.

Nevertheless, Benitez refused to suggest that things are now looking brighter on Tyneside.
“Possibly but I don’t think it’s fair for me to say that,” he said when if the club’s situation is better now, as reported by the Chronicle.
“I came just for two months and then I saw the potential.

“When you are already here and you are just focused on trying to save the team, you don’t analyse every single thing.”
Apart from the fifth place finish in the Premier League the team secured during 2011-12 season, the Magpies have consistently underwhelmed since the days following the great Sir Bobby Robson’s departure.

And while no fan would go into a season wishing for their team to be relegated, it could be argued that it was one of the best things that could have happened to the club, especially as Benitez decided to stay.
The team were able to get rid of several squad members who had been with the club for some time and epitomised the disappointing era Newcastle had endured, and instead sign several exciting players with potential to grow – in a division where it will be easier for them to realise that potential – ready for what could well be an instant return to the top flight.
