The current Newcastle United boss has been likened to the legendary Magpies manager.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told the Chronicle that comparisons to Sir Bobby Robson are flattering but he is not at that level yet.

The Spaniard took over at St James Park in March after Steve McClaren was sacked but was unable to keep the club in the Premier League.

He stayed on in the summer and after an extensive rebuilding job has led the Magpies to the top of the Championship table after 13 games of the season.

That has led to some comparing him to the great Bobby Robson, who also transformed the club when he took charge.

Benitez is flattered by such a comparison but says he is nowhere near that legendary status just yet.

“I hear the fans and read when they talk about me and they compare me with Sir Bobby Robson or Kevin Keegan. I am really pleased about that,” he told the Chronicle.

“I have my CV but when they put you at the level of people who have been so important to this club and in football, it is always good, always positive. You have to be proud of that. But I am still at the beginning.”

“My career is fine because I am old but in terms of Newcastle, the city and what Sir Bobby meant to the club, that is still far away.”

For now, Benitez will be keen to ensure the focus remains on his efforts to get Newcastle back to the Premier League.

They are top of the Championship at present with 28 points from their first 13 games but only enjoy a one-point lead over second placed Norwich City.

They are likely to be fighting with the Canaries for the title all season and will need to be at their best throughout to ensure they stay top, starting with a win over Ipswich Town this afternoon.
