The winger is set to return to Newcastle United following the end of his loan spell with the League One club.

Rafael Benitez has suggested that Sammy Ameobi will be given the chance to prove that he deserves to make the grade at Newcastle United following the end of his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, the Shields Gazette reports.

Despite remaining on the Magpies’ books, Ameobi perhaps appeared to be heading for the exit at some stage having spent the entirety of last season out on loan with Cardiff City before failing to earn a recall this term and instead dropping into the third tier with the Trotters.

However, with the 24-year-old now set to return to Tyneside following the end of his time at the Macron Stadium, Benitez has suggested that there is a potential path back into the Newcastle first-team waiting for the attacker.

“He has done well with Bolton,” he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette.

“I think he’s a player who can play in the wide areas. If he is fine, he can give us something.

“We have players going to the Cup of Nations. We have to be sure we have some players. If he’s doing well, why not? It depends on him. It depends on how much he can give to us.”

With Newcastle losing a handful of players to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Ameobi perhaps has the perfect opportunity to not only stake a claim by impressing on the training ground, but by perhaps also getting some competitive minutes under his belt.

And if he can make an impact and help the Magpies bounce back following their loss to Blackburn by strengthening their grip on an automatic promotion spot once again, then perhaps he will finally establish himself as an important player for the club in the coming months.
