The Newcastle United striker took his tally to nine on Saturday.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told the Chronicle that striker Dwight Gayle is doing more than simply scoring goals for his team.
The striker joined the club in the summer transfer window as Benitez looked to add to his options up front.
He has proved to be a smart signing with a brace in the 3-1 win over Brentford on Saturday taking him to nine goals for the season.
That result helped move his side up to second in the Championship table and took him to the top of the goal-scoring charts.
Gayle’s goal-scoring is earning him recognition but Benitez insists he is doing more than simply putting the ball in the back of the net.
“It is not just because he is scoring goals, he is working hard and was also doing a great job today between the lines,” he told the Chronicle.
“So the team as a team is doing a lot of things and then you have a striker that is good in front of goal so it’s much better.”
Newcastle will now be hoping that Gayle can keep up his scoring form for the remainder of the campaign.
Having a regular goal-scorer is obviously vital to a promotion challenge, with two of the promoted sides last year, Burnley and Hull City, having players in the top three scorers charts.
Gayle currently leads the way with nine to his name and the Magpies will be keen to see him stay there if they are to make an instant return to the Premier League.
