Back in 2019, Rafa Benitez left Newcastle when his contract expired, following a tough time working under Mike Ashley.
The Spaniard helped Newcastle get back into the Premier League after they dropped down to the Championship, largely as a result of Steve McClaren’s failings on Tyneside.
Now, even years on from his departure, Benitez has helped Newcastle again.
What’s the story?
Well, in a roundabout way, Benitez helped Newcastle secure the services of Matt Targett, who has shone for the Magpies so far since his January arrival.
The Englishman would never have left Aston Villa, had Benitez not sanctioned the £25m exit of Lucas Digne following a fallout between the pair at Everton.

Digne asked to leave Goodison Park, and accused Benitez of destroying “a beautiful love affair” between him and the Toffees.
Aston Villa were the beneficiaries of that situation as they were able to sign the Frenchman, although Newcastle also benefitted as it forced Targett out of Villa Park.
Matt Targett has shone for Newcastle
The left-back department was a bit of a problem position for Eddie Howe, as Jamal Lewis and others struggled – now, however, it’s a strong point.
Targett – who won Players’ Player of the Season at Aston Villa last term – has made two Premier League appearances for the Magpies so far, and is yet to lose.
The 26-year-old has helped Newcastle secure four points against Everton and West Ham, playing 90 minutes in both fixtures.

Last time out against the Hammers, Targett was among Eddie Howe’s best performers as he impressively recorded three key passes and two tackles.
Thanks to Benitez falling out with Digne, Newcastle have found themselves a fantastic left-back with his best years still ahead of him – he must be signed permanently in the summer.
