Could former bosses of Liverpool or Chelsea take the reins at White Hart Lane, or even the current managers of Swansea City or Everton?
Yes we know, Harry hasn’t left yet. But there is a good chance he could leave to take the England job in the near future, whether than encompasses Euro 2012 or not. If he does, who could be in line to replace him? Here are five candidates who may be tempted.
Jose Mourinho
The former Chelsea manager is a popular choice among fans to take over at Tottenham if the job becomes available. His record speaks for itself, a league champion in three countries, soon to be four? Two-time Champions League winner, he would be the ideal man to continue Tottenham’s upwards ascendency and would bring almost guaranteed success and a winning attitude. It almost seems realistic given Mourinho’s will to come back to England and leave Spain. Is he holding out for the Manchester United job though, or would he return to Chelsea instead?
David Moyes
Moyes has been at Everton for what seems like an eternity, could anything tempt him to leave? Well yes, the promise of Champions League football, transfer funds, and ambition. Everton seem stuck in a rut, made difficult by their restrictive finances, and Moyes continues to perform miracles given the lack of money available. Stephen Pienaar and Louis Saha have made the jump of late, Pienaar returning of course, but could Moyes follow suit?
Brendan Rodgers
Rodgers was suggested to us by a reader yesterday, and we can’t disagree he is a strong candidate. He has moulded Swansea into a side which play superb attacking football, causing pundits to even compare them to Barcelona. He is young, ambitious, and spent time with Mourinho at Chelsea, and this would be a great opportunity for him to further his career. How far will he be able to take Swansea? At Tottenham the sky would be the limit.
Chris Hughton
Hughton would be a popular choice at the Lane, but does he have the pedigree? He spent numerous years as the number two at Tottenham before ending up at Newcastle, He did a great job up there before being unfairly sacked, and is continuing to do as best he can at the poisoned chalice that is currently Birmingham City. At least there this season he has been getting some European experience, which would be a key part of Tottenham’s plans to build. He may not be the star man many would hope for but he knows the club and he is a safe pair of hands.
Rafa Benitez
Sure Rafa’s reputation in this country is a little in the doldrums after the way things ended at Liverpool, but it should not be forgotten he is a Champions League winner. He came narrowly close to winning the Premier League in 2009 only missing out by a handful of points. His spell at Inter Milan ended badly, but he keeps a great affinity with England, and is itching to get back into management. The Tottenham job is probably one he has his eye on. Spurs could do worse.
