The striker joined Newcastle United from Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told the club’s official website that Daryl Murphy will give them a different option up front.
The striker completed a move to St James’ Park on Sunday, signing in an undisclosed deal from Championship rivals Ipswich Town.
He was a regular goalscorer for Mick McCarthy’s side, managing 67 goals in his 225 appearances for the club, 50 of which came in the last three seasons.
Benitez will be hoping he can enjoy that kind of success again as his side look to escape the Championship at the first time of asking.
And commenting on the move, the Spaniard says Murphy will add something different to his forward line.
“Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship,” he told the club’s official website.
“He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend’s game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.”
It will be intriguing to see what role Murphy has to play in the Newcastle team moving forward.
With Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez also in the squad, Benitez now has several options available to him up front this season.
The 33-year-old would arguably be behind those three in the pecking order, although if they struggle to get the goals they need then it is easy to imagine Benitez making a swift change.
