Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has admitted to the Chronicle that they missed out on some transfer targets in the summer.
The Magpies were busy, to say the least in the transfer window, bringing in 13 players and allowing a whole raft of players to depart as Benitez completely overhauled his squad.
It was business targeted at improving every position as he sought to build a squad capable of dominating the Championship this season.
Given the number of new players that they ended up with, it would appear that they did not meet with much frustration in their dealings.

Benitez says that isn’t the case, though, admitting they failed to convince players to leave Europe’s top leagues such as the Premier League or La Liga.
“I’m happy with the players we have, for sure,” he told the Chronicle.
“We had other targets that we couldn’t get because they wanted to stay in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga or the Premier League, but I’m pleased.”

It will be interesting to see if the signings Newcastle did manage to get over the line prove to be smart ones this season.
They have arguably bought well, adding some much needed Championship experience to the squad as well as quality in general.
As a result, they are expected to dominate the league, and failure to do so would quickly see their signings labeled as poor ones.
