Sam Greenwood announced his return to Leeds United action in style.
The 20-year-old striker scored in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur in an Under-23 affair.
Greenwood’s goal on 61 minutes – a penalty – looked like being the winner, but Spurs equalised shortly before stoppage time.
This was the Sunderland-born striker’s first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in January after briefly breaking into Marcelo Bielsa’s senior squad, in which he was rewarded with two senior outings under the now-fired Argentine.
And here’s how United owner Andrea Radrizzani reacted to Greenwood’s comeback goal against Tottenham:
The young marksman quit Arsenal to join Leeds’ development outfit in 2020 for a fee which could rise to £3 million, according to The Daily Mail.
That’s a substantial fee for a then-teenager who the Whites had no plans on using as a senior player originally, indicating that Victor Orta believes in his ability.
Greenwood managed appearances in Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup duty under Bielsa this season and if not for his injury in January, might’ve featured a lot more in recent weeks due to the South American coach needing a number nine following Patrick Bamford’s fitness issues.
