Leeds United have sold last season’s top scorer but the money will be reinvested in the squad.

Leeds United fans got the news they had long suspected when it was confirmed that Chris Wood had signed for Burnley this week. But while it is a bitter blow to their promotion hopes, Whites supporters can at least take hope from their owner’s swift response to the news.

In a statement published on Leeds’ official website, Andrea Radrizzani made it clear that the money received for the New Zealand international would not simply be hoarded away, but would instead be spent on adding to the significant signings the club has already made this summer.

“Supporters can rest assured that monies generated from the sale of Chris Wood will be reinvested into adding to the 12 signings we have made already,” Radrizzani told leedsunited.com.

There is limited time to get more deals over the line, with just 10 days remaining in the current transfer window. However Leeds now have an additional wad of cash burning a hole in their pocket, and their manager Thomas Christiansen will have been looking for new strikers as soon as it became clear Wood was moving on.

There is a distinct possibility that Wood could live to regret his decision, with Leeds looking a good bet for promotion this season. Yet now it is up to the Whites to bring in a capable replacement and put the forward’s previous achievements in the past.

The likes of Caleb Ekuban, Samu Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski have all looked impressive despite only recently arriving at Elland Road, but that is unlikely to be enough now that Wood has moved on, with Leeds needing another experienced Championship striker as soon as possible.
