The Saints were beaten 3-0 by their Magpies counterparts in the Premier League Cup on Friday night.

Southampton Under-23s boss Radhi Jaidi has issued a damning verdict of his side’s 3-0 hammering at the hands of Newcastle United U23s on Friday night.
The Saints travelled to Whitley Park for a Premier League Cup game and were comprehensively outclassed as the Magpies took maximum points and now look likely to top Group H.
Luke Charman opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 28th minute, latching onto a loose ball following Rosaire Longelo’s free kick, and the 21-year-old duly found the top right-hand corner of the net beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jack Rose
Longelo continued to be a thorn in Southampton’s side as he contributed to the second with his run down the left flank, breezing past Saints ace Christoph Klarer, led to a cutback from the byline which was met by Toure on the turn and sent low past Rose.
The impressive Toure then added his second of the match and his side’s third late on, sliding the ball into the bottom corner of Rose’s net to condemn Jaidi’s charges to their first three-goal defeat of their campaign.
Southampton U23s have been largely impressive this season but their second defeat in three games – they lost 3-2 to Leeds United but bounced back with a 1-0 win over Manchester United (Soccerway) – is cause for concern in Jaidi’s eyes.

“It’s not us,” the Tunisian told the official Saints website at full time. “If I’m assessing the past 10 games, we’ve been on the front foot. We’ve achieved most of what we’ve set out to do recently, so tonight is very disappointing.
“We started poorly. We were battling the conditions, and had two younger boys who are new to the team. Some bad individual performances tonight. We need to make sure we address that before the next game. We need more consistency and dig in more. There’s a lot of distractions, and the boys need to be reminded of their responsibilities.”
