Both Scott Bain and summer signing Fraser Forster have pushed ahead of Craig Gordon in Celtic’s goalkeeping pecking order.

Rab Douglas has expressed his concerns over where Scotland’s next goalkeeping star will come from as he urged Celtic’s Craig Gordon to leave in January.

Gordon has found regular game time at Parkhead hard to come by because he first lost his starting place to Scott Bain, and now summer signing and Southampton loanee Fraser Forster has donned the gloves ahead of him.

If Gordon was playing on a regular basis, he would be in contention for Scotland, and with Allan McGregor now retired, it means that David Marshall is the one responsible in keeping the ball out of the back of the net.

Nonetheless, former Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper Douglas thinks Gordon needs to have a word with Neil Lennon about his future, as he shared his thoughts on Scotland’s potential long-term problem between the sticks.

“We had a great era with Allan McGregor, David Marshall and Craig Gordon and it’s probably time for the next cycle,” Douglas told BBC Sport. “But where the next ones are coming from is slightly concerning. There are not many stand-outs.

“Craig might have a discussion with Neil Lennon in January. I don’t think anybody wants to sit on the bench.

“He’s at the tail end of his career now. It’s not going to be about the money for Craig, it’s about playing and enjoying it.”

It’s very unlikely that Gordon will break into Celtic’s XI, as his best choice is to part ways with the club when the transfer window re-opens.

He has vasts amounts of experience and he would no doubt suit the majority of other Scottish Premiership sides, it’s just that his time at Celtic now seems to be over.

Either way, if Gordon wants to have one last shot at proving his worth to others then moving in January and getting some minutes under his belt is the best way to do it.
