Peter Schmeichel says he was ‘quite surprised’ that Ange Postecoglou made Son Heung-min Tottenham Hotspur’s new captain.

In the summer, it was expected that Hugo Lloris, the club’s longest-serving player, was going to head for the Tottenham exit door.

That’s why Ange Postecoglou named Son Heung-min as his new captain, even though his experienced French goalkeeper, and now former captain, ended up staying put.

Either way, that call by the Tottenham boss left legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel surprised, as he thinks has now proven to be the correct call, as he told Premier League Productions (07/10/23 at 12:15 pm).

With or without the captaincy armband, Son Heung-min is a very popular figure in the dressing room and a fan favourite amongst those in Spurs colours.

That was probably a big reason why Ange Postecoglou handed him such a key role, with Peter Schmeichel stating that he is a ‘fantastic’ player.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min

“He has done really well,” said Schmeichel. “I was quite surprised, to be honest, that he was named captain.

“He has been there for so many years. You need that kind of culture in there. Somebody who knows this club and what it’s all about. Somebody who knows the good times at Tottenham and what was done when that happened.

“So, he’s just a fantastic player. The pace of him. All the runs. The intelligent runs. The positions he takes up.

“And he also comes across as a really, really nice guy. When he comes across like that on interviews, then you think you what he’s like in the dressing room. If he is like that, then he is a very good choice of captain because he is a well-liked person and leads by his performances.”

Tottenham sitting top

Despite so many things being against Spurs, including the exit of Harry Kane and the timing of his departure in the summer, then it’s admirable that the London club have performed ever so well.

Not many, not even the most ardent of Spurs fans, would have thought that they would be sitting top of the league after eight games.

What’s even better for the Spurs fans is that they are watching their team do in a style of football that they have been craving for.
