Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Eddie Howe has shared the latest on Callum Wilson’s injury, and sadly, it’s not the most positive of updates.

The striker went down injured against Manchester United a couple of months ago now, and he’s not been seen since.

Wilson has an ankle problem, and sadly, it sounds as though he won’t be back anytime soon.

Indeed, Howe says that it won’t be a short-term problem, stating that he hopes he’ll be able to contribute in the final games of the season.

What’s Howe said?

The manager gave an update on Wilson.

“There’s a time when he’s due back, but I think that time will, as always, with those types of injuries, it’s not absolutely clear. We’ll go by how he feels rather than a specific time given by physios or doctors. It’s been slow progress for him since his initial injury. He was recently on crutches, I think he’s come off crutches now and he’s walking normally, which is a big step, but you can see by that update that it’s quite slow,” Howe said.

“We all wish for Callum to be back as quickly as possible, but when he comes back he has to be fit an ready to give his best. I don’t think it will be short-term, hopefully he will make the last few games of the season and help us in those key moments,” Howe said.

Can’t rush

As tempting as it is to rush Wilson back into the team, Howe is taking the right approach here.

Chris Wood is a very capable replacement, and if Wilson isn’t 100 per cent, then he’ll just be a detriment to the team.

As Howe says, Newcastle will be hoping that he can contribute in the final games of the season, but until he feels 100%, the Magpies can’t rush on this one.
