Nuno Tavares posted a massively-improved performance for Arsenal this afternoon.
Arsenal bounced back from their 4-0 defeat at Liverpool with a 2-0 win at home to Newcastle United.
Tavares had a shocker at Anfield and was directly to blame for at least one goal that the Gunners conceded.
However, Mikel Arteta kept faith and started him at left-back over Kieran Tierney once again.
And the Portuguese defender was far better, it has to be said.
He was a constant thorn in Newcastle’s side and even set up Bukayo Saka with a clever reverse pass which ultimately led to Arteta’s side going ahead in the second half.
But in the first half, his decision making looked poor as Tavares elected to shoot from some very odd positions, instead of passing to better-placed teammates.
And Jim Beglin, on commentary for Optus Sport, noticed Arsenal fans in attendance who were ‘quite irate’ with the former Benfica star.
He said: “There’s a couple [of fans] standing up behind us who are quite irate that Tavares took that on from that range. That was not the right decision from the left-back.”
Define
So not a perfect performance from Tavares but, on the whole, a very positive one.
This is someone who Arsenal paid only £7 million for last summer and given that he’s only 21, displays like the one at Anfield are inevitable.
It’s how you respond to such disappointments which defines you and it has to be said, Tavares responded brilliantly.
