Speaking on Off The Ball, Phil Thompson has been discussing Steven Gerrard and his future in management.
Thompson is a very close friend of Gerrard’s having spent many years coaching him at Liverpool and working at Anfield as an ambassador.
Gerrard has, of course, been out of work since being sacked by Aston Villa last year, but Thompson believes it won’t be long before he’s back in the game, and he’s named the Leeds United job as an interesting prospect for his former protégé.

Gerrard for Leeds
Thompson discussed the former England captain and Leeds.
“Do you know what, there will be jobs coming up quite soon. The Leeds one is quite interesting. You do wonder. Obviously the lad from Spain apparently isn’t coming, so that one might still rear its head, but there’ll be other options for Stevie. The Poland one wasn’t the right one, but any publicity is good publicity as a manager,” Thompson said.
Not for him
Gerrard may well have the capabilities to do a good job at Leeds United, but the Whites seem to want to go in a different direction here.
Indeed, Leeds are looking for a more fashionable manager – hence the links to Marcelo Gallardo, Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, and Gerrard, a recently sacked Aston Villa boss, doesn’t quite fit that bill.
Luckily, it may not be long before the Southampton job is up for grabs, and perhaps that would be a better fit for Gerrard at this moment in time.
It surely won’t be long before we see Stevie G back in the Premier League, but where he ends up remains to be seen.
