Ian Wright told Premier League Productions that he found it ‘quite interesting’ that Liverpool have tried to play the same without Virgil van Dijk.
The Highbury legend shared that he was reading a piece where it stated that Liverpool, even with their star centre-back in the treatment room, haven’t changed their ways and have continued in their usual style.
It’s difficult as it is for Liverpool to deal with one hammer blow, but with Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out for the season, it’s going to take down even the best of teams – and so it has.
Nonetheless, Wright shared his thoughts on Liverpool not changing their ways despite having a depleted squad to choose from.
“One of the things that was quite interesting was that I read a piece about Van Dijk,” said Wright.
“And Liverpool trying to continue to play in the same manner without a player of Van Dijk’s ability and when he progresses the ball and the team working off of what he does,” said Wright.
“And they have tried to play in the same way and it’s not quite worked.”
Liverpool will perhaps look towards last summer and how not bringing in another centre-back has proved to be costly.
Whilst nobody could imagine the injury carnage that would unfold in front of Jurgen Klopp’s eyes, he only really had three senior CB’s to choose from, and of them in Joel Matip is injury prone.
Not only that, they parted ways with Dejan Lovren, who left another experienced hole at the back for Liverpool, so that extra fresh face needed to be brought in.
