The former Watford manager is now seventh favourite for the Birmingham City role.

Quique Sanchez Flores, the Espanyol and former Watford manager, has emerged as a surprise contender for the Birmingham City manager’s job with bookmakers Sky Bet.

Academy coach Lee Carsley has taken temporary charge of Birmingham in the wake of Harry Redknapp’s sacking last weekend.

And Carsley (9/2) is currently fourth favourite to succeed the veteran boss on a permanent basis, ahead of Nigel Adinks and Alan Pardew (both 10/1) and behind Aitor Karanka (15/8), Steve McClaren (3/1) and Steve Cotterill (7/2).

But at 12/1, and having not been listed among the bookies’ options beforehand, Flores could be one to watch in the coming days.

The Spaniard, who managed Watford during the 2015-16 season, led Espanyol to eighth in La Liga last term.

And the Barcelona-based side are currently 12th in the standings – four points clear of the relegation places.

Elie Baup, the former Marseille manager, is another new name at 14/1, with Exeter’s Paul Tisdale also listed, at 18s.
