Jamie Carragher stated that Andre Gomes adds ‘quality and class’ to Everton’s midfield after they beat Arsenal 2-1, as he told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (06/12/21 at 10:20 pm).
Everton came from behind to beat the Gunners last night, with Gomes coming off the bench and supplying the assist for Demarai Gray’s stoppage-time winner.
Gomes was brought into the action in the second half for Andros Townsend and he added that control in midfield for his side.
With the game ticking towards full-time, Gomes picked up the ball in the middle of the park, with Ben White and Granit Xhaka ahead of him, as he jinked past their challenges, before playing the ball out wide for Gray to cut in and score a quite stunning winner.
Carragher pointed out how Gomes ‘doesn’t play too much’ for Everton, but he showcased his quality against the Gunners.
“What Gomes does is that he adds a bit of quality and class in midfield for Everton that isn’t normally there,” said Carragher.
“He doesn’t play too much. But he adds this composure. Even there just to relax on the ball, to turn inside and keep the attack going (before he assists Gray for his goal).
“More often than not, that would have been played forward, then they have got a problem.”

That was a much-needed three points for Everton and one that was needed for all involved with the club.
A lot was said about the mood around Goodison Park, after protests towards the board, questions of Rafa Benitez, Marcel Brands leaving and eight winless games.
But the Toffees showed fight, spirit and pure passion to overcome an Arsenal team that is sitting just outside of the Champions League places.
Of course, it’s only one win and it doesn’t change the issues the fans have with the board, but at least it’s a positive step forward for the club.
