The R’s manager has led his side to three wins on the bounce, including Friday’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.
After overseeing Queens Park Rangers’ worst ever start to a league campaign, it is a fair assumption that R’s fans were perhaps contemplating a long, arduous season with Steve McClaren at the helm.
The seemingly underwhelming appointment back in May was met with concern by QPR supporters and, after the first four games of this season, it looked like League One football in 2019 was a real possibility.
McClaren, though, managed to source three loan deals prior to the transfer window shutting and has gone on to record eight wins from the last eleven games, with seven clean sheets in that period.
The former England manager is certainly riding the crest of a wave at the moment, but it will take a lot more for McClaren to restore his reputation to what it once was.
After unsuccessful spells with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and the national side, McClaren soon found that top managerial positions were becoming few and far between.
With that said, McClaren almost led Derby County back to the Premier League in 2014. But he has not come anywhere near the heights he hit as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United and his stint as Middlesbrough boss.
QPR’s decision to sack Ian Holloway in the summer did come as a surprise but, since McClaren’s appointment, it appears the club are moving in the right direction and the former FC Twente manager is certainly being spoken of in a good light.
There are still 31 Championship fixtures for McClaren to demonstrate his abilities over the course of the season. But, after leading Rangers from 24th to 10th in a matter of weeks, with a comprehensive and efficient system in place, there is no reason why he cannot restore his credibility in English football.
